METRO DX CLUB MEETING
MINUTES – October 19, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:36 PM by club president,
Bob Adamitis, K9MDO. The minutes of the last meeting, in abbreviated form, and
the Treasurer’s report were read by Sect/Treas. Jack Nienhaus W9NJB. Tonight’s
meeting was held at the workplace of Phil Snyder, N9LAH at 13600 S. Kildare in
Crestwood. Thanks Phil.
Old Business:
John Holmes, W9ILY reported on scores attained in previous
club entries and also coming contests. Members Tom-W9AEB will be on from 1A3A
and Zig-KM9M will be with V26B in the
CQWW-CW 2007 contest. In 2006 Metro finished
with 448,058 points which was 50th place of the 60 clubs reporting. For the
2006 ARRL International DX contest results, Metro finished with 855,984
points and, since we had 11 entries, we were classified as a "Medium
Category" club. We learned that the results of the ARRL SSB and CW contests
are combined for the club scores and if more than 10 entries are received the
club is placed in the Medium Category. Had we been included in the Local
Category, our score would have placed us 5th overall. We'll have
to watch the submissions in future years more carefully. Upcoming contests are
JARTS RTTY and the Illinois QSO Party this weekend in which W9ILY will
operate mobile as W9TY/M. Next weekend the CQWW-SSB will be held on the 27th and
28th with the CW section occurring on the weekend of November 24-25. All
Club members were encouraged to participate in the CQWW contests as they can be
entered as Club competitions.
K9MDO reported on our sick
members:
Bob Truhlar W9LNQ is much improved, but unfortunately Dot,
N9ALC has been troubled with dizzy spells.
Walt Kline, KA9CBJ’s XYL reported to K9MDO that today was a
red-letter day for Walt. It was the first time he was able to "solo"
driving his car since his recent illness.
Roger Borowski, K9RB is still on the mend.
Our best wishes to all on the sick list hoping they will soon
be better.
There was a lively discussion about the club’s lack of a
permanent meeting place. County Board and hospital politics were responsible for
losing that location, but several club members are still giving us some hope for
the future.
New Business:
The Annual Winterfest Banquet will take place on January 18,
2008 at the Old Barn Restaurant in Burbank. Because of restaurant price
increases, the charge will be $25 per person.
Jack, W9NJB, showed a unique U.S. postage stamp, received on
an envelope from K7ACZ . The stamp had a picture of the ham’s QSL card with an
extension on the right side of the stamp stating it was U.S. postage, 41 cents.
It also had printed "ZAZZLE.COM / Pitney Bowes."
Last week both Jerry K9PY and Bob K9MDO were working on
antennae. They had no bruises or broken bones so I guess neither fell off the
roof.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:11 PM and then K9MDO and W9ILY
started their very interesting program on FP8 St. Pierre and Miquelon Islands.
Bob started out with a history and geography rundown and then went to a Power
Point program that included many views of the islands and the antennae and the
place they operated from. Bob gave commentary while John provided additional
details. Despite the total lack of sunspots during that week, they still made a
respectable number of QSOs, 2,705 in all. It was a very enjoyable and
interesting presentation enjoyed by all.
Members present were – W9ILY, K9MDO, W9NJB, K9BWQ & XYL
Dolores, K9PY, N9ORD, N9LAH and N9AKR.
Respectfully submitted by Jack Nienhaus, W9NJB, Sect./Treas.
