Metro DX Club
Meeting Minutes
May 9, 2014
The meeting was called to order by President Jim Mornar,
N9TK, at 7:40 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We welcomed our
newest member, Billie Kerouac K9QT to Metro. Unfortunately, Billie was not able
to attend this month’s meeting.
Old Business
a.)
Health and welfare:
i.)
W9ILY explained to the group that he had spoken with Dot, N9ALC,
XYL of Bob W9LNQ. Bob is at his home now and is visited daily by a physical
therapist. He is in a wheel chair all the time and is not very responsive. Bob
would certainly appreciate hearing from the club members. Cards should be sent
to: Bob Truhlar, 1701 W. 101st Street, Chicago, IL 60643.
ii.)
Bob, K9MDO, is now on his way back to Illinois from his home in
Florida.
b.)
All members received a copy of the March minutes. K9TP moved they
be approved and the motion was seconded by K9DRS. Minutes approved.
c.)
The Treasurer’s Report was reviewed by W9ILY. Income was from
the K9QT membership dues and expenses were for postage. Details were distributed
to all members. The report was approved. Our complete Treasurer’s Report is in
the “files” section on our Yahoo Group.
d.)
Upcoming contests were discussed by Bob, K9CJ and Jim, N9TK.
Upcoming is the CQ-M Russian contest and Armed Forces Day this weekend. The
CQWPX-CW will run on the weekend of May 24-25. N9TK and W9ILY will be operating
from the K9CT superstation for WPX. Jim, NV9X, discussed the three QSO parties
last weekend and how the N1MMLogger program worked well for all three contests.
e.)
There were no WUST awards requested or issued since last month.
f.)
The WAE Challenge for Metro was reviewed by again W9ILY. There are
three classes: those having fewer than 100 DXCC, those having 100-200 DXCC and
those having over 200.To date only seven members have reported their activity to
W9ILY for web posting. The rules and results are on the web site. We need more
participation.
g.)
Mark, our picnic chairman, gave a very brief report about the
picnic. It will be at the N9LAH QTH on the first Saturday in August. Additional
details to follow.
h.)
Our Metro representatives at the Dayton Hamvention will be N9ORD
and N9LAH. They will be in booth FE4019.
New Business
a.)
Our July meeting will feature a CW Pileup program, the same as is
held at W9DXCC. K9AJ will be giving the program with W9ILY assisting. Eight
persons may participate at a time. There will be prizes!! K9CJ mentioned that
operating in Field Day will be good practice for the pileup competition.
b.)
Clublog Donation: W9ILY explained that last year Metro donated the
equivalent of $50.00 to support Clublog with the work they do for DXpeditions.
It was moved by NV9X and seconded by K9CJ that a similar donation should be made
this year. Motion passed.
c.)
General discussion:
1.)
We need to have a refreshment chairman to handle this after the
picnic. K9PY noted that the refreshments used to rotate between members in past
years. For June, N9TK and K9CJ will provide the goodies.
2.)
K9DRS noted that dxmaps.com are very helpful and have great
graphics.
3.)
N9TK told the story of his Ducie Island experience and how one
station’s log had the wrong year in the log that caused lots of problems.
4.)
W9ILY noted that the VK9ML DXpedition had a problem with their 10
meter logs being off by several hours. This was corrected by the DXpedition
members.
K9TP moved the meeting close with a second by K9CJ. The
meeting closed at 8:23.
We all enjoyed a refreshment period but we were unable to
have a program as planned. The Tinley Park EOC has changed their internet access
so that it is no longer public but requires a user name and password that we did
not have. Bob, K9CJ, will see if he can secure one for the next meeting. An idea
was suggested for a future meeting that DX clusters, spotting and various DX
sources be described and explained. This is a great idea and will be helpful for
all.
Attendees: K9CJ,
K9DRS, K9PY, K9TP, N9TK, NV9X, W9ILY and WB9LSH.
